  46.  
  47. I downloaded the latest version of MegaEm yesterday and pkunzip
  48. reported CRC errors in the zip file.  I crossed my fingers and
  49. ignored these errors.
  50. Unfortunately, my PC hangs when I try to run either mesetup.exe or
  51. megaem.exe.  I have tried deleting my old megaem.cfg and 512.bnk.
  52. Has anybody had any success with this latest beta?
  53.  
  54. By the way, I have a GUS MAX - and the previous MegaEm beta worked fine.

  127. The GUS-club questions:
  128. 1.  The flange effect originated in old tape players, where you had to fuddle
  129. somewhere and make the speed sound wrong.  Hard to explain, it's used a lot in
  130. Pearl Jam's "Oceans" (from Ten).
  131. 2.  Reverb plays back sound from a very short inverval behind at a lower volume
  132. , giving the impression of a room or a cave.  Echos usually use a larger
  133. interval, I guess.  It's used nearly anywhere, just try talking in a hall.
  134. 3.  Whoops!  Don't mix my service and my hobbies.  Ask somebody else.
  135.  
  136. MIDI control in DOS - you mean ultrinit -lo.  That enables line-in.  If you
  137. have a newer GUS try fiddling with ultramix as well.
  138. as for MIDIFier - it's a great app for jam sessions, and basically turns your
  139. GUS into a MIDI module.  Yes, it lets you hook a keyboard up.
  140. Distortion guitars?  Check out Eliseum's (sp?!) newest upload to EPAS,
  141. e_e-gtrs.zip.  You'll have what you want.
  142.  
  143. Using custom patches in Windows?  Check out the BankManager feature of Patch
  144. Manager (it's up there on the menu).  Have fun!
  145. VoiceAssist uses some Sound System drivers, I think.  Something custom.  Anyway
  146. the program's too dumb - you bang your desk by mistake and it quits the app
  147. and stuff like that.

  149. The new dimension in gaming, or Focal Point 3D, has gone with a rather loud
  150. bang, as Focal Point sued (yes, sued) Gravis for breach of contract or dunno.
  151. Anyway, no more 3D, unless you're using HMI drivers.

  153. The ACE can do anything a GUS can do, since the GF1 is on-board, EXCEPT use
  154. recording, CD, or line in.  It's just the synth, ma'am.  Anyway,  it
  155. interpolates like a wonder, and runs 2ndreal fine.  BTW, try "dope" (clx_dope)
  156. for an amazing 3D demo.

  158. MIDI player for linux?  Adagio.  That's all I know, sorry.

  160. About the Doom 3D sound features - they're still there.  What Doom 1.2 used was
  161. the ability of the GF1 to pan an effect (or sample) to any of 18 pan positions.
  162. So, instead of 3 places for the growls to come from you suddenly had 18.  Neat.
  163. FP3D used 6 different samples (one for each 3D direction) and gave you real up
  164. down back front sound, not just 180 degree panoramic.

  168. GUS trackers?  There are two I'd recommend - ScreamTracker 3.21 and FastTracker
  169. II.  ST3 makes the common .S3M files.  Look for it at mpoli.fi or EPAS.

  197. Go to an Ultrasound ftp site, and look around for a file called ft203.zip.
  198. This is Fast Tracker 2, the best tracker on the planet, which has a 
  199. relatively easy to use mouse-keyboard interface, and oodles of features. 
  200. You can record and edit your own samples using it, or steal samples from 
  201. other people's songs, or load samples in most formats, or load GUS .pat 
  202. instruments even, so this should get you raw material.

  233. To the user having trouble playing WAV files on his GUS:
  234.  
  235. First, make sure that you aren't plugging the AMPLIFIED output of the GUS 
  236. into an amplifier.  This will overdrive it badly and cause serious 
  237. distortion, if not actual circuit damage.  If you are using the line-out 
  238. instead of amplified-out, then try reducint the mixer volume for WAV 
  239. output.
  240.  
  241. Next, you should be using a 16-bit DMA channel, not an 8-bit one.  
  242. You are currently using channel 1 (the second and third numbers in the 
  243. ULTRASND variable) which is only 8-bit.  Try channel 5, 6 or 7.  This may 
  244. not fix the WAV problem but it may fix other stuff.

  336. Don't use General MIDI as your music device. Instead, copy the ultra.mid 
  337. file over the SoundBlaster 16's MIDI device (can't remeber the filename...).
  338. Also, you might want to try the new AIL 3.0s from archive.epas.utoronto.ca.
  339. Don't know if it will make a big difference, but it's worth a try. The 
  340. filename is called: usail311.zip
  341.  
  342. BTW: In the next few days, I will upload an optimized patch for System 
  343.      Shock CD (as soon as I get through my finals...). Look out for it
  344.      in archive.epas.utoronto.ca.

  367. It seems it is not  a problem with the Ail ...In fact if you use you 
  368. the config SBlaster/Sblaster in the install menu ...you ll get all 
  369. the musics but sometimes it sounds static or sbstyle..;-( (Level 2 
  370. ,3,4)..because these midi files were designed for a OPL-3 chipset 
  371. which doesn't support all GM effects !
  372. btw: on level3 there is lotsa sound FX....when you are using a the GM
  373. option you can heard a manufacturing machine...when you use the 
  374. Sblaster option ....you can heard like a Duracell Bunny who is hitting 
  375. his drum !...;-)..
  376. In fact you can encounter this problem when you are only on level 2 
  377. or Level 4.....If you want to have the music...then simply exit the 
  378. game and reload the level...and the music ll be there !

  392. Friend of mine got one, it seems everything that doesn't need the
  393. recording part of the GUS should work fine. So mod players, games etc.
  394. work as if with a gus. Linux seems to compile with it too. It uses the
  395. same 256kb x 16bit chips as the other new GUS's and comes with 1/2 MB.
  396. Don't forget to disable the joystick with ultrinit -dj..

  398. About Win95/NT and GUS:

  400. I'm not surprised it works for some people and not with others
  401. considering the staggering numbers of different versions of Gravis'
  402. Windows driver and the various Win95 betas. The preview was build 347,
  403. i've used 445, and i've heard of 468 a while ago. Anyone know what the
  404. current build level is? (type "ver" at a prompt). 
  405.     Until proper support, night the GUS work better in DOS sessions
  406. WITHOUT the windows driver? Seems that DOS support would be a higher
  407. prioroty to GUI support for many people.
  408.     Also, to the guy writing the NT driver: You've got balls man. Good
  409. luck. I don't use it now, but i might in the future if the interface
  410. comes out of the stone age before i die...
  411. Oh, and to anyone who hopes this man's driver will work with Win95...
  412. it probably won't. Different driver scheme and underlying assumptions.
  413. NT=stability, Win95=compatability.
  414.     Also, what games do not work under Win95? I've seen some work with a
  415. SB16, but much of the digital sound was screwed up on some games...
  416. like One Must Fall. The music was all wacked out (its mod-type music).
  417. Does it sound right with a GUS? I'm just wondering if some problems
  418. are also timing related and this affects different hardware
  419. differently.

  436. Just tried the above and unfortunately it doesn't quite work.
  437. If I chose Sound Blaster in the game
  438. setup then I get broken speech just as it was in Megaem 303b.
  439. But if I choose Sound Blaster Pro then I get a sort of
  440. shaking speech but understandable.  Just want to know if
  441. anyone has had better luck with this game.  Thanks

  453.     I have a GUSMax and I have been noticing that with the GUSMax in 
  454. DOS with line in enabled with UltraInit, the lineout volume is lower than 
  455. the line out from my CD Player but it is working correctly under 
  456. Windows.  On my regular GUS, the volume for line out is correct in DOS.  
  457. Does anyone know how I to fix this problem?  I am running the GUS v3.53 
  458. disks.  Thanks in advance!

  475.     I mentioned earlier that the line out volume is alot lower than 
  476. the line in volume from my CD Player's line out on my GUSMax under DOS 
  477. but this works at the correct volume in Windows but I just noticed 
  478. something else.... That like MOD's sounds like static under DOS and when 
  479. playing midi's, it just locks up.... It also locks up 
  480. Windows after a minute of loading it up, when I try to access Modus, it 
  481. just locks up the machine... I recently switched to a ASUS P54TP4 P5-90 
  482. Motherboard using the Intel Triton chipset, does anyone out there know 
  483. how to fix this problem?  Thanks in advance!
